Golden History Museums has been researching the Astor House by exploring historic editions of the Colorado Transcript, found online through the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. We are looking for new stories to include when we update the exhibits in the building. We have found some fascinating details about different groups of people who stayed in the Astor House. In its early years, the Astor House hosted a lot of tourists and travelers coming through Golden. In 1896, the Astor House ran an ad trying to attract “Wheelmen” to dine or stay the night. Don’t know what a wheelman is? Well, neither did we.
