History | In 1937 Andy Johnson was elected Fire Chief and he held this position until 1951. In 1937 there was only 27,000 inhabitants in Jefferson County. When the fire station began, all firefighters were volunteers. On July 10, 1958 the International granted a Union charter in the name of the Lakewood Professional Firefighters Association and the Local 1309 was formed. Not until the beginning of the 70s was there a transition from two-platoon system to a three-platoon system. It meant more jobs, a more tolerable work schedule, and it remains a permanent structural component today. It also welcomed a full paid fire department. The volunteers have since disassembled. |
