HistoryThe founding namesake of the American Legion Post #17, was Robert Downing, Jr., a graduate of Edgewater High School who died in World War I. The Post was activated in 1948 at 22nd and Sheridan after an earlier aborted attempt following World War I in memory of Paul Tomlin. The Legion plays an active part in the Edgewater community through city events, scholarships and donations. The Sexsons donated the lot and financed the new building in 1974 located on Harlan.
