In 2026 we celebrate two major milestones—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 150th anniversary of Colorado’s statehood. These occasions are once-in-a-generation opportunities to come together to reflect on the origins of our nation and state, celebrate our achievements, examine our shortcomings, and dream about the kind of place we hope the United States and Colorado will be 50 years from now.
Plans for the anniversaries have been in the works for nearly five years. Nathan Richie, Arts, Culture and Museums Department (ACMD) Manager and director of Golden History Museum & Park was a founder of the State’s commission and appointed by Gov. Jared Polis as the state’s representative for museums and cultural organizations. He has served as Commission co-chair since 2024. He helped create statewide commemorations including the Commission’s 13 Signature Initiatives—a full listing of which can be accessed at www.AM250CO150.org.
The Arts, Culture and Museums Department has been planning several events and initiatives to mark the anniversaries in Golden. In February, the exhibit Glimpses of Golden opened at the Golden History Museum and showcases important events and people that shaped our community from its earliest days as Territorial Capital to its present fame as a science, technology, and recreational hub. On June 13, the Museum will present its gigantic 38-star garrison flag with a public event and reception for Flag Day. On Saturday, August 1 we will celebrate Colorado’s statehood with a family festival and open house at Golden History Park. We will also rededicate the Guy Hill Schoolhouse that is also celebrating its 150th birthday! And on Saturday, September 12, the City will host a showing of the “Stories in the Sky: Colorado at 150” drone show. This special event is free and will take place at Ulysses Park at dark.
Additionally, new interpretive signage at the History Park will tell the story of the origins of the Colorado Territory. Plus, the City of Golden has been selected as one of the participating sites for Gov. Polis’ “Trails of Time: Colorado at 150 Years” initiative. The City is being given two large murals that will highlight Colorado’s history. One mural by artist Yazz Atmore will grace the side of the Golden History Museum and feature famed jazz musician George Morrison, onetime owner of the Rock Rest Lodge. The second mural “Cloud to Creek”, by Graham Carraway, will adorn the City’s water treatment plan and highlight the importance of the Clear Creek watershed. Both artworks will be completed by August and become part of Golden’s public art collection.
We are all fortunate to call the United States and Colorado our home. We invite you to join your neighbors to mark these important occasions at these events and activities this year.
